HB5062 Calling for the Expansion of Pre-Apprenticeship Programs

IL Rep. Mary Flowers introduced bill HB5062 to promote the funding of pre-apprenticeship programs, like Manufacturing Connect, into 12 communities throughout the state. The bill has now been sent to the Elementary and Secondary Education Curriculum and Policy Committee of the Illinois House of Representatives. It is scheduled for a hearing on April 10.

Why is it important? 

  • Illinois Manufacturing Association projects IL will have over 160,000 unfilled manufacturing jobs in the next decade

  • Increasing gap between available skilled workers and available jobs — due to economic expansion and retiring baby-boomers

 

What Are the Potential Benefits?

  • Connecting education and industry will create a young talented pipeline

  • Manufacturing sector will grow

  • Investment in manufacturing sector increases people’s discretionary spending, generates more tax revenue and creates a middle-class
