INCLUSION & INDUSTRY 4.0

Last Wednesday, on June 6th, The Century Foundation hosted Inclusion & Industry 4.0 at the UIC Student Center in Chicago. The summit was the third in a regional series organized by the High Wage America campaign of The Century Foundation's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative to develop bold ideas to make America a high-wage society again in manufacturing communities across the country.

The Conference had three main panels. The first one presented a recent research project, highlighting manufacturing’s significance in the Chicago region and the sector’s potential to meet the needs of Black and Latino communities. "Underpinning this analysis is the belief that Chicago’s disinvested communities deserve access to quality jobs with good wages, and that the manufacturing sector, through inclusion, has the potential to provide avenues to promote those goals".

The second panel focused on educational programs active in the Chicago area that are addressing the needs of manufacturing companies and low income communities. Our Director of Operations, Erica Staley, had the opportunity to present our work through Manufacturing Connect.

The third panel explored ways to retain manufacturing jobs by showing different stakeholders' roles and practices - Safer Foundation, UI Labs and TMA Education.

Overall the event was a great success with labor, workforce, community, business and political leaders represented. Manufacturing Renaissance takes great pride in partnering with The Century Foundation, UIC Great Cities, AFL-CIO and The Chicago Federation of Labor for organizing this event. We hope to plan next steps to support all the great efforts in Chicago to connect communities to good paying jobs!
