The High-Wage America (HWA) project was launched in 2017 to research, define, and promote policies that can stimulate a productive economy and sustain jobs across the country. The project is supported by The Century Foundation's Bernard L. Schwartz Rediscovering Government Initiative. Manufacturing Renaissance has played a vital role over the past year helping The Century Foundation and other sector leaders to bring this issue to the attention of stakeholders and policy makers in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois, eventually leading to a full-on advocacy effort in Washington DC.

In June, The Century Foundation hosted the third summit, Inclusion & Industry 4.0, at the UIC Student Center in Chicago. In September, the final summit, Building a High Wage America: Lessons from the Heartland, brought policy leaders together to report back on lessons learned from TCF’s yearlong High Wage America tour. It also presented concrete policies that federal lawmakers can use to raise wages, help revitalize manufacturing, and strengthen local communities in the Midwest and beyond. Two key note speakers were Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Their remarks can be seen here.

The High Wage America Project has developed a comprehensive framework for regional industrial policy, based on best practices and designed to spur next-generation products and high-tech production, retain jobs in sustainable industries, deploy worker training and education programs that build a diverse workforce, and mobilize responsible capital. These policy levers are within the reach of regional leaders who can drive the recovery of manufacturing communities, through a closely coordinated approach to economic and workforce development.
