Manufacturing Renaissance has been selected from The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership as a Youth Delegate Agency for our Manufacturing Connect program. The initial grant work will be carried out between January and June of 2019 and it involves serving 30 youth enrolled at Austin College & Career Academy. It is our hope to secure such stream of funding for the school year 2019-2020 as well.
Manufacturing Renaissance was awarded a multi-year grant from the MacArthur Foundation to develop its strategic business plan. This is the first grant we ever receive from the MacArthur Foundation, symbolizing a breakthrough in being recognized from major philanthropic players in the area.
Following on the good news, Manufacturing Renaissance was one of the 10 winners of the Google.org Impact Challenge Illinois for its Manufacturing Connect program. The Challenge was the first one statewide and there were over 170 applicants.
Of the 10 finalists, 5 others are Chicago-based: Cara Chicago, After School Matters, Future Founders, North Lawndale Employment Network and True Star. Mattoon in Motion, a Downstate organization, won the public vote to receive the additional $250,000. Mattoon plans to launch a Cross-County Innovation Center - a collaborative work space, where entrepreneurs can receive resources, training, mentoring and coaching.
During the event, Google announced the expansion of its financial operations to the Windy City, planning to increase its workforce by 10%. Guest speakers included Andrea Sáenz, Chief Operating Officer of the Chicago Community Trust, and Tina Tchen, former chief of staff to First Lady Michelle Obama.
