GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN MANUFACTURING

In honor of #WomenHistoryMonth we want to highlight the success stories of our girls and young women that are discovering and building a career in manufacturing. 40% of our Manufacturing Connect participants are female and 28% of our Young Manufacturers Association members. Manufacturing has long been a male dominated trade. In Chicago 3% of the 200,000 trade workers are female and 30% nationwide. We are trying to change this trend, particularly for low-income communities, because manufacturing jobs offers good starting wages, great benefits and a career path. 26 YOUTH COMPLETE JOB SHADOW DAY

"This is way more fun and interesting than being in class" Edson Martinez, Junior at Prosser Career Academy, while at Chicago Metal Supply. 26 Manufacturing Connect participants from Austin College & Career Academy and Prosser Career Academy participated in Job Shadow Day last Thursday, February 28. These 26 Juniors and Seniors shadowed professionals throughout their daily tasks from 9am til 2pm, by also getting the chance to complete some work on their own. 10 manufacturing companies collaborated with us by hosting 18 of the participants; the remaining 8 shadowed staff personnel within the Austin school.
